The exhibit includes the finest work from the Heard Museum's permanent collection and reflects the importance of family, community, land and languages - commonalities that play an important role in the lives of all American Indians. Heard Museum, "Remix : New Modernities in a Post Indian World." 15
contemporary Native artists have much to say about the modern world. The
exhibition's title, "Remix” references hip hop culture in which DJs create
new beats and sounds from an expansive repertoire of music. In a similar
fashion, the artists in "Remix" explore what John Haworth, Director of the
Smithsonian's George Gustav Heye Center, calls a "mix of high and low,
popular and fine, historic and contemporary, community and global.” The vast
territories explored in "Remix" span from skateboarding and drag queen
subcultures to video games, politics and urban architecture. Through informed, articulate and insightful mixed media work on canvas and in video, photography, sculpture, collage and live performance, "Remix" defies simplified, mythologized notions of cultural identity. Instead, it offers fresh, complex and nuanced expressions that reveal the ways indigenous artists are engaged in a rapidly-evolving 21st century world. This exhibition was organized by the Heard Museum, Phoenix, Arizona, and the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian. The exhibit Smithsonian's George Gustav Heye Center in New York in May 2008. The Heard Museum is located at 2301 North Central Avenue, Phoenix. The second changing exhibition at the new location of Heard Museum North Scottsdale. The exhibition draws from the Albrecht Collection of Arctic Art at the Heard Museum and focuses on the preeminent Inuit art community in Canada's Arctic, Cape Dorset (also know as Kingait). The art of this southern Baffin Island village became famous in the early 1950s; since that time, three generations of artists have created sculptures, drawings and annual collections of limited edition prints. Many exhibiting sculpture artists use traditional materials to create work that expresses facets and feelings in living a non-traditional life. Three such artists are Annie Pootoogook, Suvinai Ashoona and Siassie Kenneally, cousins whose work has gained prominence in the last 10 years. The family’s work is often autobiographical and contains social commentary. Visitors to Cape Dorset Art: Tradition and Innovation can expect to learn about traditional and non-traditional Inuit life through art. The Summit at Scottsdale 32633 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale, Ariz. Adults: $5, Seniors (55+): $4, Students: $2, Under 6 years: free, Americann Indians: free, Heard Museum Members: free.
