Ongoing   Heard Museum Exhibits. Home: Native People in the Southwest. Experience the living cultures of Native people in the 21st century with the Heard's signature exhibition. More than 2,000 objects tell the many stories of "home" for Southwestern Native peoples from ancestral times to today. The exhibit includes the finest work from the Heard Museum's permanent collection and reflects the importance of family, community, land and languages - commonalities that play an important role in the lives of all American Indians. Stories are told through first-person recollections, commissioned works of art, photomurals, free films, a media room and a native garden. Every Picture Tells a Story. This interactive, kid-friendly exhibition explores the meanings behind the designs and symbols depicted in American Indian artwork. Whirlwind, saguaro, lizard, maze and coyote track designs are displayed alongside image-laden artwork from the Northwest Coast and the Arctic tundra. Remembering Our School Days: The Boarding School Experience. This groundbreaking exhibition explores the controversial 1879 U.S. federal government mandate designed to "civilize," assimilate and Americanize American Indian children by sending them to Indian boarding schools. Learn how Native children were separated from their families and often stripped of cultural identity and language. With sounds from the past, poignant black-and-white photomurals and in the voices and words of boarding school attendees, this moving exhibit traces the history and evolution of the American Indian boarding school experience. We Are! Arizona's First People. Perfect for families and school groups, this interactive gallery invites visitors to learn more about the past, present and future of Arizona's 21 federally recognized tribal communities. From the importance of land and family to the preservation of languages and traditions, We Are! gives a glimpse into the contemporary worlds of Native America. History and Collections at the Heard Museum. This Gallery traces the museum's history of more than seven decades, offering a glimpse into the Heard's unparalleled collections of American Indian art and cultural materials with an emphasis on the Southwest. Wednesday, Aug. 25 through Sunday, Sep. 12   Noises Off, Phoenix Theatre. This play pushes farce as far as it can go, following the onstage and backstage antics of a fifth-rate acting troupe touring in a new, horribly-written sex farce called Nothing On. The curtain opens on the dress rehearsal of the first act the night before it opens and with things not going well. In the second act we hear the first act of Nothing On from backstage as the wheels start to come after a month touring on the road. The third act takes us to the second month of touring. It is, deliciously so, a hilarious disaster with each act packed with more laughs than the one before it. Phoenix Theatre is known for its exceptional sound and intimate seating with no seat more than 60 feet from the stage. Phoenix Theatre is located at 100 East McDowell Road, just east of the Phoenix Art Museum at Central and McDowell. For information and tickets call (602) 254-2151 or visit www.phoenixtheatre.com.

Paria River Tamarisk and Russian Olive Removal:The Grand Canyon Trust Volunteer Program. Riparian streams in the Southwest are at risk and we need your help! Tamarisk and Russian olive were introduced into the southwestern U.S. in the late nineteenth century to help control streambank erosion. Since then, these highly invasive species have spread throughout the West and caused major changes to rivers and streams. Tamarisk out-competes native vegetation and alters the chemistry of the soil, making it unsuitable for native species. The Grand Canyon Trust and the Bureau of Land Management have formed a partnership to remove tamarisk and Russian olive trees from 18 miles of the beautiful Paria Canyon Wilderness and restore this amazing river ecosystem. This will be a week of backpacking and sawing down individual trees by hand, so come ready for hard, physical labor and the rewards of doing your part to protect this incredible river!
