Scottsdale’s McDowell Mountain Ranch, Eldorado and Cactus aquatic centers open for unstructured public swimming from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday starting May 1. There are tons of fun fitness classes offered by Scottsdale Parks and Recreation in the cool air conditioning of local community and senior centers! Scottsdale Summer Sports Team Registration.
Scottsdale’s adult sports programs are registering teams for summer fun. Get your team into softball, kickball or basketball. Softball and kickball are played one night a week for seven weeks with a tournament for all the teams at the end of the season. Complexes are located throughout Scottsdale. The basketball league plays two times a week indoors for five weeks with a tournament for all the teams to wrap up the season. Online registration is under way. Altar Boyz, Desert Stages Theater's Actor’s Cafe Series.
These small-town-boys from Ohio are hilarious together as they do their best to spread the word of God after making it big in New York City. In a story of struggles and temptations, the show takes place in real time as the last concert of the group’s national “Raise the Praise” tour. Altar Boyz had its original debut in the 2004 New York Musical Theatre Festival and won two Broadway.com Audience Favorite Awards in 2006 and 2007. After five years of entertaining audiences, Altar Boyz closed Jan. 10, 2010. Tickets Online & by Phone. Beyond Geronimo: The Apache Experience exhibit at The Heard Museum.
Curated by the Heard Museum and presented by JP Morgan Chase, the exhibit is an Arizona Centennial Legacy Project, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Arizona statehood in 2012. Unprecedented in scope and depth, this exhibit will combine objects from the Heard’s world-class collection with exemplary pieces from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History and National Museum of the American Indian, the Autry National Center, the Oklahoma Historical Society, the Southern Plains Indian Museum, Allan Houser, Inc., the Amerind Foundation, the Arizona Historical Society, the Desert Caballeros Western Museum and a number of private lenders. Combining examples of cultural and fine art, the exhibit will include historic artifacts never before seen by the general public, such as the celebrated Naiche hide painting. Mother's Day Purse Project.
The Foothills Food Bank and Resource Center is assisting Good Shepherd Episcopal Church to develop the Mother's Day Purse Project to help women in need in northern desert foothills communities. This is the fifth year Good Shepherd has implemented the project and this year, all of the bags will benefit the food bank’s “clients.” According to the food bank’s executive director Pam DiPietro, women who sign up for the project will receive a purse filled with toiletries. The purses can picked up on Wednesday, May 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or Thursday, May 10 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Church. Every June, the Via Linda and Granite Reef senior centers provide a care package of summer goods for isolated, frail and homebound senior citizens. You can help by donating supplies. Items needed include reusable bags and water bottles, nutritional supplement drinks (i.e., Ensure or Gatorade), bottled water, small snack items, personal hygiene items, stamps, and grocery gift cards (minimum $35). A Scottsdale original is getting better, adults can now tackle the obstacle course. This year’s event is at Chaparral Park, 5401 N Hayden Road. The original mud course will be free in the morning for those 7 to 17 years old. From noon to 2 p.m. adults can run the course for $10. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Those under 18 must bring a signed permission slip or have a parent or guardian available at the event to sign one. Young twins Jack & Liza Periwinkle yearn for adventure, so imagine their joy at discovering a real life treasure map! But when the infamous Redbeard and his pungent Pirates of the Curry Bean steal the map and kidnap their mother, the race is on to rescue her, reclaim the map and find the treasure! Along the way tons of creative characters get into the act and students will have so much fun with this show.

Can't sing? Don't worry. Though everyone participates in the chorus, there are plenty of parts for actors who do not want to sing solos. $399 per camper. Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center. Scenic Drive Roadside Cleanup. Support Keep Scottsdale Beautiful Citywide Cleanup. Picking up litter is more enjoyable than you would expect, and there will be at least 13 miles of roadside (6 1/2 miles on each side) that will look terrific. New volunteers are welcome. Join 20-50 other Friends of the Scenic Drive volunteers. Volunteers man two sign-in locations: #1. northern Scenic Drive entry sign (located on west side of Scottsdale Road just south of Carefree Highway, in front of Terravita Marketplace), #2. Scenic Drive monument sign area (located on east side of Scottsdale Road 3/4 mile north of Happy Valley Road, across from MacDonald's Ranch). Safety vests, pickup "sticks," and plastic trash bags will be provided. Complimentary coffee, donuts, and water are available. Gloves and long pants recommended. When you register, you will be assigned a specific roadside area to cover.
